The Augmented 7th Chord



The augmented 7th chord is not one of the more commonly used chords. It does have its place, though. It often serves as the V7 chord in minor tunes. The augmented 7th (aug7 or +7) is similar to the dominant 7th chord, but with a raised(+)5th. This creates an interval of a major second between the 5th and the 7th of the chord.

If you are familiar with the Beatles' song "Oh Darlin'," this is the chord that starts the song and is played right before the top of the verse.

Gaug7 (G,B,D#,F) to C

Am7 (A,C,E,G,) to Eaug7 (E,G#,B#(C),D)
