The Minor 7th Chord

The minor 7th chord (min7, m7) is another commonly used chord. The chord is basically a minor triad with a fourth note added at an interval of a minor third above the fifth. The distance from the root to the seven is 10 half steps, which is a minor seventh interval. It is important to note that this interval can be simply called a "7th." So, in a min7 chord, the word "minor" refers to the type of chord.

The min7 chord is used in almost all styles of music. Try some of these common chord progressions using the minor 7th:

C (C,E,G) to Am7 (A,C,E,G)
Dm7 (D,F,A,C) to G7 (G,B,D,F)
Am7 (A,C,E,G) to Dm7 (D,F,A,C)
Cma7 (C,E,G,B) to Dm7 (D,F,A,C) to Em7 (E,G,B,D) to Fma7 (F,A,C,E)
